Football for Development. How through sport global learning, fair play and peaceful co-existence can be developed.

Expectations of football are high: "Football has a

universal language. It can bridge social, cultural

and religious differences. It strengthens self-

development, teaches us how to work together,

builds confidence and opens doors to new

opportunities. All this in turn can lead to the

well-being of whole communities and countries."

This was formulated by Kofi A. Annan, former UN

Secretary General and Joseph Blatter, President

of FIFA (International Federation of Association

Football) at the opening ceremony of the 2006

  World Cup.

The publication "Football for Development" picks

up on these expectations and investigates the

dimensions and ambiguities of football. Here

football is regarded as an approach towards

integration and for the prevention of violence, as a means of cooperation both in development and in the peace movement. Places of global leaning are discussed, such as clubhouse and playing field, stadium and television screen, school and intercultural meetings. The book's findings are clear:  The learning environment has to be very carefully planned for football to fully develop its strength and potential for fair play and peaceful co-existence.

The book supports the use of football and gives advice on implementation in schools or in extracurricular activities, in clubs or within the framework of international youth organisations.

It can be ordered at www.shop.friedenspaedagogik.de for 12,- Euros incl. 7% VAT.

KICK FORWARD-Straßenfußball für Toleranz. Handreichung für Jugendarbeit, Schule und Verein (“KICK FORWARD - Streetfootball for Tolerance. Brochure for Youth Work, School and (Sport-)Clubs”)

“Streetfootball for Tolerance“ is a new pedagogical concept designed to open up spheres of learning and experience for social and integrative cooperation via sport. In schools especially, the concept is very much appreciated. There are competitions taking place regularly, which also appeal to groups in open youth work. The value-oriented basic philosophy, the specific rules of the game and the central role given to the so-called “teamers” make “Streetfootball for Tolerance” an approach which is inspiring and capable of further development.
In this approach, elements of violence prevention and peace education can be integrated just as well as notions of democratic education or global learning or education for enduring development. Since 2001, KICK FORWARD takes care of the sport aspect as well as the pedagogical advancement of the concept. The brochure on hand takes up the experiences of KICK FORWARD and “Straßenfussball für Toleranz Brandenburg” and offers information, tips, and material for the realization of “Streetfootball for Tolerance”. Comprehensive scientific examinations and evaluations, which could offer certain proof of the projects’ strengths and weaknesses have still to be undertaken. The experiences that have been made up to now, however, and the first systematic analysis are rather encouraging and advertise the individual use of the concept in the future.

The brochure can be obtained at the Institut für Friedenspädagogik Tübingen:

Football and International Learning-Partnerships

The method "Streetfootball for Tolerance" as a common sphere for learning and experience is the content of this brochure. The development of common project-contents which go far beyond a simple get-together of young people; the combined work on these contents over a long period of time as a common project in global learning is explained here. It is described in detail how project contents can be developed, how they can be accompanied and which learning effects may be the result.

The children's book Pie und Queso - Zwei Fußballsocken unterwegs in Argentinien (Pie and Queso - Two Football Socks on their Way through Argentina")

The idea for this children's book came from the pupils themselves. It was triggered by a visit by the partner-project "Defensores del Chaco" from Argentina in 2004 in Ostfildern. The pupils were so impressed by the tales they had been told by their guests that they wanted to write a story about them. The result was the oversized, walkthrough children's book about two football socks which travel through Argentina. On more than 20 large format posters, the children tell the adventures of Pie and Queso in an impressive way. They got an enormous amount of positive feedback for it. With the story of Pie and Queso in the book-format on hand, the authors wanted to make the story accessible to a larger public. They present their book in numerous readings and sell it themselves. One half of the earned money is sent to their friends of "Defensores del Chaco" in Argentina. There, a similar project intends to publish a book about two football socks travelling through Germany. By buying this book you give benefit to two projects, in which children and adolescents from two parts of the world learn from each other, develop ideas together and do something for each other.

You can purchase the book at KICKFAIR for a nominal charge of 12 Euro (plus shipping costs). E-mail to: info@kickfair.org

Children Cook Internationally

Intercultural Learning by Cooking

What do people in Iran eat? "Khorbesch-E-Gheimeh, for example" answers Florian like a shot. Florian is 11 years old and one of more than 20 children in the project "WM-Kochen" (WM-cooking). Between December 2005 and June 2006, 5th grade pupils from the Erich Kästner Hauptschule in Ostfildern have not only learned about the cultures, capitols, mountains and rivers of the countries taking part in the FIFA World Cup 2006, but especially about the people living there. Thus, they learned about their living circumstances and their various eating habits. After school, they researched, cooked and tried dishes; together with Achim Kunz, cook and gastronome in Ostfildern. Then, they compiled recipes for a cookbook. In doing so, they did not only gain insight "behind the scenes" of a restaurant. They could also experience the work in the kitchen and in the service and help co-design the decoration and arrangement of the food. They were able to learn that food does not only come out of cans and small packages and how much fun cooking with fresh and healthy ingredients can be.

With the cookbook, the children want to pass on their acquired knowledge about cultures, people and traditions._"They want to show other children, that involvement beyond classes can be worthwile. They want encourage them in a time of increasing globalization - reassure them to meet foreign cultures, to learn from them for their own benefit."_(quote taken from the introduction written by Dr. Monica Scholz, Minister of Employment and Social Affairs in Baden-Württemberg and patron for this project.

The cookbook can be purchased for a nominal charge of 12 Euro plus shipping costs. Send an e-mail to info@kickfair.org.

All profits are used for the benefit of the youth projects.

STRASSENSOUND 06

STRASSENSOUND 06 was a supporting project of the "Streetfootball for Tolerance World Cup 2006", which was carried out by KICKFAIR as part of the Europe-wide campaign "Stand Up Speak Up - Football against Racism". Besides the playing which followed special rules of fairness, the exchange of views about fairness, tolerance and xenophobia was at the very centre of this "WM": In the photo-project "My tolerant hometown" ("Meine tolerante Stadt"), adolescents documented their view on fairness and tolerance. The forum "Voice your Opinion" ("Sag Deine Meinung") was an open discussion-platform in all 14 participating towns in which young people could exchange their personal experiences with intolerance and xenophobia. STRASSENSOUND 06 describes these experiences and opinions in their lyrics. The musical initiative was carried out in cooperation with the music project "bits and bites for music" from Tübingen.

The CD is available via KICKFAIR (e-Mail to info@kickfair.org). It is 5 Euro plus shipping. The profits are going to be used for future projects.
